Defibrillator Saves Howe High School Athlete's Life
(Carmel, IN) - September 21, 2009 - A Howe High School student is back in classes and recovering from a frightening collapse at football practice, thanks in part to a proactive athletic trainer, and the ongoing leadership of Methodist Sports Medicine / The Orthopedic Specialists and Clarian Health in providing the best possible care for Indianapolis Public School (IPS) athletes.
When Larry Anderson, Jr. collapsed during the team's first practice in early August, the school's full-time athletic trainer was not only on-site and able to react quickly to the emergency, but he had immediate access to the school's only defibrillator which he brought to practice. By the time an ambulance arrived on the scene, Jason Moffitt, the athletic trainer for Howe, along with several coaches restored Anderson's breathing.
A heart disease known as cardiomyopathy will keep Anderson from playing football, but a new pacemaker is helping him get back to his regular routine. This story may not have had a happy ending a few years ago.
For years, Kathy Malone - Sparks, Sports Medicine Services Coordinator for IPS, of Methodist Sports Medicine / The Orthopedic Specialists and Clarian Health, split her time as athletic trainer at multiple IPS schools. Through her recent efforts to expand sports medicine services and with the support of Clarian, IPS schools now have full-time athletic trainers and in some cases like Howe High School defibrillators on campus.
"Since the September airing of the WTHR story, IPS has received seven donated AEDs for their schools," said Malone - Sparks. "Three schools that formerly had no AED on campus (John Marshall, Shortridge and Crispus Attucks) each received a donated AED. The school system is still seeking the funding to purchase an additional 180 AEDs for placement in all IPS schools and administrative buildings," according to Malone - Sparks. click here for the WTHR story
