After his undergraduate studies, he continued on at Ball State University, earning a doctorate in Human Bioenergetics (Exercise and Muscle Performance Physiology). His interest in orthopedics took him on to medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine, after which he interned at Methodist Hospital of Indiana and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Wright State University in Dayton.

He continued to gain experience in additional care settings, undertaking a three-month foot and ankle specialty rotation under James Amis, MD, in Cincinnati and a 12-month foot and ankle fellowship at the Foundation for Orthopedic, Athletic and Reconstructive Research in Houston with Dr. Donald Baxter and Dr. Tom Clanton. Active in the presentation and publication of research regarding sports-related foot and ankle injuries, Dr. Porter serves as a peer reviewer for national and international medical journals. He is the author of Baxter’s The Foot and Ankle in Sport textbook published in 2008 and has had over 40 articles published on sports-related topics as it pertains to the foot and ankle. In 2012, Dr. Porter was recognized in the April 23rd edition of Street & Smith’s Sports Business Daily Journal as a leading specialist as it pertains to foot and ankle sports injuries and conditions. He is also the 2013 recipient of the Team Physician Award from the Indiana State Medical Association Commission on Sports Medicine.
