  • Biography

Dr. Klootwyk specializes in knee reconstruction, arthroscopic knee surgery and orthopedic sports medicine.

As a high school athlete in Indiana, Dr. Thomas Klootwyk developed an early interest in sports-related injuries and the science involved in facilitating recovery. That interest has turned into a career spanning more than two decades.

Since 1999, Dr. Klootwyk has served as a team physician and orthopedic consultant for the Indianapolis Colts, champions of Super Bowl XLI. He brings his knowledge and expertise to each individual patient he sees whether it is an athlete or any other member of the community.

After receiving his medical degree with high honors from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Klootwyk completed his fellowship training in sports medicine with an emphasis on knee injury treatment at Methodist Sports Medicine and joined the practice in 1992.

Dr. Klootwyk is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is one of two physicians in the state of Indiana who belong to the ACL Study Group, a selection of 135 knee surgeons who gather from North America, Europe and Asia for a one-week discussion about advancements in the treatment of ACL injuries. This worldwide panel meets bi-annually.

A native of Bloomington, Indiana, Dr. Klootwyk is a 1978 graduate of Bloomington High School South where he played football and basketball. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors from Indiana University in 1982, and achieved Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1986. He has been married for 29 years and has three daughters.

Dr. Klootwyk belongs to the International Cartilage Repair Society, the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association, and the NFL Physicians Society.

Dr. Klootwyk says he applies the good listening skills a man naturally develops from living with four women (his wife and three daughters) to every conversation he has with a patient. His work as a team physician and orthopedic consultant for the Indianapolis Colts also gives him many opportunities to provide focused one-on-one care and enjoy his favorite sport.
