“The complexity of the human brain makes it vulnerable to life-changing injuries and possibly permanent effects. I have been fortunate to practice operative neurosurgery for over 30 years, during which time I have dedicated my best efforts to the prevention and treatment of diseases of the brain and sports injuries. My association with Methodist Sports Medicine / The Orthopedic Specialists enables me to focus on the needs of each individual, which can help me prevent an injury or minimize the impact it has on the patient’s quality of life.” – Terry Horner, MD

Bio

As a junior in high school, Dr. Horner developed an interest in the vast complexity of the brain and its unique capabilities. Selected for a National Science Foundation scholarship between his junior and senior years of high school, he spent eight weeks at Indiana University studying bioanthropology. After that experience, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon. He considers himself fortunate to train under and eventually practice neurosurgery with Dr. Julius Goodman, an internationally renowned educator, personal mentor and giant in the neurosurgical field.

The recipient of back-to-back Patients’ Choice awards, Dr. Horner received his graduate degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed a straight surgical internship at Indiana University Hospitals. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam, he returned to complete his residency in neurosurgery. Board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Horner has been a neurosurgical consultant to the Indianapolis Colts for many years. He was instrumental in organizing the vascular neurosurgical division of the then Indianapolis Neurosurgical Group, which was nationally recognized for its state-of-the-art expertise. Dr. Horner is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurosurgeons, the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiologists, and many others. He is a clinical associate professor of neurosurgery at his alma mater, and has enjoyed teaching junior and senior level neurosurgery residents, medical students and ER residents.

Dr. Horner and his wife Jane have two sons, one daughter and four grandchildren. A devout member of his church, Dr. Horner also enjoys taking mission trips to underdeveloped countries where he volunteers his time and medical expertise.
