Methodist Sports Medicine is proud to offer medical screening evaluations for individuals wishing to return to physical activity and sport after they have recovered from COVID-19 infection. Several organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), recommend medical clearance by a physician before returning to physical activity for those who have recovered from COVID-19. This includes individuals that were asymptomatic, experiencing no symptoms at all, while they were infected with the virus.
Dr. Matthew Negaard, an emergency medicine and fellowship trained primary care sports physician, will be performing the evaluations. He brings with him a unique skill set and experience in diagnosing, treating, and evaluating COVID-19 patients in the emergency department and in treating athletes with COVID-19, insuring that they return to sport safely. Dr. Negaard also contributed to the AAP COVID-19 Intern Guidance: Return to Sport section.
The evaluations will consist of a comprehensive medical history and a physical exam to determine if further advanced testing is needed. Dr. Negaard will review the gradual return to sport protocols endorsed by the AAP and AMSSM with each individual patient.
We understand the importance of physical activity and sport for both our physical and mental health and we strive to keep athletes of all ages and abilities to stay moving as safely and comfortably as possible.
