Dr. Bender specializes in disorders of the shoulder and elbow, including sports medicine. He is fellowship trained in the advanced reconstruction of the shoulder and elbow.
He received his undergraduate degree in Pre-Medicine Biology from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008 as the school’s valedictorian. He went on receive his doctorate of medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2012, where as a junior he became part of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, among the top 4% in his class.
Dr. Bender completed his orthopedic surgery residency in 2017 through Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners/ Michigan State University. In 2018, he completed a prestigious shoulder and elbow reconstruction fellowship in Houston, Texas under the instruction of Dr. T. Bradley Edwards with Texas Education & Research Foundation for Shoulder & Elbow Surgery (TERFSES) at Texas Orthopedic Hospital.
In the fall of 2018, Dr. Bender was honored to join the distinguished team of physicians at Methodist Sports Medicine. He treats all forms of shoulder and elbow problems, whether that be young athletes with throwing injuries, fractures, instability, or degenerative conditions of the tendons or joint. Dr. Bender performs both minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow as well as “open” surgeries for trauma or joint replacements. He has a special focus on both primary Total Shoulder and Reverse Total Shoulder replacements ranging from straight forward cases to the most complex and revision scenarios.
He currenntly works as the team physician for Park Tudor High School. During his training, he assisted the team physician of the Houston Astros in treating their athletes with throwing injuries, such as ulnar collateral ligament injuries and what is known as “Tommy John” surgery.
Dr. Bender strongly believes in patient-centered decision-making, where patients feel engaged and comfortable making informed decisions. He strives to help patients create the best individual treatment plan to help get them back on the field, or experience life pain-free for the first time in months. You can expect his treatment to include a balance between utilizing the benefits of the newest technology and proven, gold-standard treatment principles to achieve the most reliable results.
An Indiana native, Dr. Bender and his wife are glad to be back in their home state. They are the proud parents of twin boys and a little girl. In his free time, Dr. Bender enjoys golf, basketball, fishing, time with his kids, and involvement in his church.
